As we work on new aspects of the site, I plan on reworking the gallery a little bit. Now that we've had it running for a while, I've noticed that we have a lot of people posting pictures in a lot of different ways. SO, I want to know what your preferences are.

Well, I voted for the biggest, but really my answer is more of "it depends". Cause it depends on how the picture is taken, is it porttrait or landscape, whether software is used to enhance, and if it is optimized when saving before posting.

I mean, if someone takes a pictures while standing 3-4 feet away, and then resizes it down to even the 400-500 pixel wide its gonna show up as tiny on the screen.

On the otherhand, if the macro setting s turned on and someone takes the pictures from under a foot away, then you could probably scale it down to the 300-400 pixels and still have it look great for seeing the details.

There are several other aspects of posting picutres than just size, but since that is the topic at hand, thats where I will leave it.

Like What Horn? I'm interested in your perspective on these aspects. The post is about size, because it effects the layout I am building, but feel free to bring up these other aspects so I can get your feedback.

Well, most of the items I am talking about are pretty much all on the posters not the hosters.

Just general photography stuff:

  • distance - depends on camera's macro ability

  • lighting - using external lights from decent angles verses using the flash on the camera

  • environment - does the back ground enhance or distract

  • framing - what is a good pic verses not

  • photoshopping - cropping, zooming, correcting contrast, color, highlights, etc..

  • SAVING - saving the right way can make huge difference on file size

I guess related to creating a new gallery, things I would say to keep in mind are:

  • Ease of uploading

  • Place to include picture descriptions

  • Auto thumbnail

Of course you probably already knew those so........

Yeppers. The Autothumbnail thing is something I am working on, but am being careful about. I haven't been able to find a decent script to resize the photos whent hey are saved. Simply resizing them with the code doesn't drop the file size.

If anyone has any ideas on scripting this, let me know and I will take a look at it. Keep in mind, no PHP allowed.

As for the other concerns, that sounds like a GREAT idea for a reader submitted article! You up for a challenge Horn?

Well, I know a way to do the autothumb in Flash, but that probably won't work for what you are needing. I got friends that do PHP but you said you cant do that. What script are you doing it in, I might have a couple people that could help, depending on the language being used. You doing your own gallery? or simply modding a freeware one?

On the How-To article. If you give me about a week I think I could give it a shot. Assuming you want me to do it html ready, what size constraints do you want me to do it in?

With the exception of this forum, everything on Mil-Net is done in ColdFusion and was built by FreeFall or myself. No PHP template crap here.

I can't believe that someone who uses ASP is running down PHP.

It's like complaining about greenhouse gases emitted by SUV's but driving
a deisel truck.

I'm not running down PHP. We're proud of the fact that our sites are original and done by ourselves.

do you have Flash at all? Preferably Flash XP, cause that is the one that I am more familiar with.

Actually, the one that I have been working on, involves Flash, PHP, and XML.

I have been creating mine based on this thread here:

well, i typed it wrong, I meant flash mx, not xp. But, either way, its not mx 2004.

Problem is MX 2004 uses some different terminology than the mx version, so my gallery that I am creating would not be staright compatible. It will need to be modified a bit in the scripting to work.

I'll see if i can get someone from the kirupaforum boards to help me do that when i get far enough along.

I think it's doable in Flash, I just hadn't really thought about it. I've screwed aroudn with Flash for a couple years now, but never really had any reason to apply it practically, so I haven't done anything too advanced. Now I have a reason to play a little more, and I have a Flash mentor now (Blitz). It's nice to have something practical to work on for a change.

I think the gallery should include the older images as well as the new stuff.

It will Sparky. Basically everyone will be allowed to go through and pick their two images, if they have more than two. They can then edit them with new images, etc.

That is of course, assuming Neil and I can ever get to this. Something about paying work coming first or something like that.
