We've given the news a few days to move through the community, so now I suppose its time to start answering questions and filling you in on what we plan for CAV's future.

The best place to start is with our agreement with Reaper. We've signed a 1 year license with Reaper that will allow us to create new content for CAV. The license only applies to CAV, so you don't have to worry about us disappearing for the next 9 months to develop AICom or Imperator or anything else.

Under our agreement with Reaper, we're allowed to create new SA's, Assets, Strikes, Upgrades and Doctrines as the basis for campaigns, scenarios, stories, adventures and even new factions. We are /not/ allowed to create new miniatures. This is mainly due to the fact that the miniature pipeline will be pumping out existing (up-scaled and CAV 2) miniatures for the duration of our current agreement.

The next year is going to be a very important time for CAV. The reason Reaper initiated this 3rd party business model was to try and get CAV back on the track of being a viable product line for them while still maintaining their other existing product lines. We have 12 months to reinvigorate CAV and convince the gaming market that CAV is here to stay.

Mil-Net will succeed at this through several avenues, the first of which will be this web site. Mil-Net is currently being re-designed from the ground up to serve as a content house for CAV. Once re-launched, every weekend will begin with a Friday Update, in which Mil-Net will release new, free content for CAV. The exact content will change from week to week and will run the gamut from scenarios and optional rules, to product sneak peeks and play-testing requests. Some weeks there may only be one or two items included in an update, others there might be five or six. You'll never know until you check in.

Friday Updates will help build CAV by providing the fans with not only regular, new content, but by also keeping you up to date with what we're doing behind the scenes. They will also help the developers by allowing us to gauge your reactions to certain items or rules. Your feedback from using SA's, optional rules and variant datacards provided in Friday Updates will help adjust those things before they go into official products.

The second method that Mil-Net will utilize is faction books, scenario books, etc available in PDF format. These books will be available in a method similar to what Reaper is using for the CAV 2 book, where you'll pay for the book via our website and gain access to a download of the file. The exact details of what will be available and when it will be available are still being worked out. All of our For Sale products have to be approved by Reaper and will not be announced publicly until we have Reaper's stamp of approval.

Finally, if sales of the PDF's prove successful, we plan on releasing printed books. Exact formats are still up in the air, but you can expect several smaller PDF's to become available as one large book in order to keep operating costs as low as possible.

On the note of For Sale products - everything that we produce will be available for sale on Mil-Net.net. Reaper has the option of selling our PDF products on their website as well and can choose to pick up any physical products we create to release into distribution channels like Alliance.

So now that you have a good idea of what we plan to do, why don't I take the time to introduce you to who's going to be doing it. As most of you probably know, Mil-Net has been in existance almost as long as CAV has been. We started out in 2001 when CAV was still just four minis and a Yahoo! Group. The original group behind the scenes was FreeFall, KaiMaster and myself. We added Blitz to the mix not too much later, which turned out to be a good move for both us and CAV in general!

Over the years we've had the chance to form an extremely good working relationship with Reaper and we've been blessed to meet (and even play CAV with!) some great people in the community. When Ed approached us about this 3rd Party deal there were a few people who we immediately knew had to be involved and luckily for us, they all agreed. So here's your new CAV Development Team:

Thane "FreeFall" Barnier - Thane's freelanced for Reaper for a few years now. He was a contributing author for both the Warlord and CAV 2nd Edition Rulebooks and was the primary author of the Overlords faction book for Warlord. Thane will wear several hats here at Mil-Net, as the primary writer for both the Malvies and the Templars, as our Production Manager and sharing web development duties with me.

Rob "Chrome" Davis - In my spare time away from running the day to day operations here at Mil-Net for the past 6 years, I've served as an alpha and beta tester on almost every CAV product released and unreleased and was a contributing author for the CAV 2 rulebook. In addition to serving as the public face of Mil-Net, I'll also be acting as our Business Relations Manager, which is a fancy way of saying that I'm the liaison between Mil-Net and Reaper for all of our business dealings. On the development side, I'll be the primary author for the Ritterlich and our Project Manager.

James "KaiMaster" McCollum - James has been a Mil-Net admin since day one, but a lot of his stuff probably goes unnoticed behind the scenes. He's also been an alpha/beta play tester for Reaper for years. He's the guy we depend on to proof-read and edit our content and will continue that role as our Editor-in-Chief in addition to tackling the occasional tech issue or three.

Neil "Blitz" Nowatzki - There's not much to say other than go open your CAV 2 rulebook or JoR 2 and drool, then go play with your Starhawk VI's and Emperors. Neil will serve as Mil-Net's Art Director on both the web and print side of things.

Matt "Akela" Ragan - Matt began his CAV career as a freelancer writing for CAV, before taking full-time employment with Reaper and eventually becoming The Man for CAV, Warlord and RAGE. Just because he's back in the IT World now doesn't mean his love for CAV has diminished at all, so he's joined us as Mil-Net's Product Development Manager where he'll continue to oversee the general direction of the game world and our future products. Matt will also be the primary writer for the Adonese, so expect to hear me ridicule him regularly.

Jeremy "Jeremy" Barnhill - Jeremy's played CAV for as long as I can remember and served as a play tester for both CAV 1.5 and 2. Jeremy will be our jack-of-all-trades, doing whatever is asked of him regardless of how much flak Kai gives him.

Chris "Spartan" Carlson - One of the most active members on both Reaper's and Mil-Net's forums and the guy who spends more time helping new players than anyone I know. Chris will serve as the primary writer for the Terrans, a role he filled as a contributing author on the CAV 2 book as well as play tester.

Pat "Mad Pat" Haughton - Another ex-Reaper peep, Pat worked closely with Matt on CAV and other projects while at Reaper and continued working on CAV 2 with Ed and Michael in his spare time after he left the company. Pat has a very special role in the company, but I don't want to reveal it yet, lest we spoil the surprise. He'll also help out with whatever else Matt and I can con him into doing.

Jeff "Erion" Hoffman - Our other jack-of-all-trades, Jeff served as a play tester for both CAV 1.5 and 2.0 and has remained an active member of the CAV community for years.

Shaun "preFUNK" Rice - Shaun was a contributing author for the CAV 2 rulebook and a play tester for both 1.5 and 2. His main role at Mil-Net will be acting as the primary Rach author.

In addition to the details I provided, each of these people has been active in Black Lightning over the years (well except for Matt, he only ran the program). I feel that we've formed a great group of people to help build CAV and I'm sure you'll agree as well.

The launch of the new website is at least a few weeks away, so this is probably the last big update I'll do until that time. I'd ask everyone to stay away from the "what's the first book you're releasing?" type of questions. Like I said before, everything we do that we plan on being official has to be OK'd by Reaper first. The proposal/approval process does take a little time so please be patient. It would be pretty obvious to expect any news of this type to be included in our Friday Updates though.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask them, I'll do my best to answer them. You may either post them here or send them to me via email at chrome at mil-net.net.

Thank you,
Rob

No, not at this time. We feel that we have a good, solid plan in place and the team to execute it. There's a fine line between not having enough people to get the job you need finished and having so many people that nothing ever gets done right and I think we're right on that line.

This does not mean that we're not paying attention to suggestions or feedback that everyone is providing. We're still checking our forums and Reaper's every day, so if you have something that you think would make a good addition to the game, or a rule that you think needs to be tweaked, please post it (along with valid arguments and good examples) and we'll definately consider it. And of course if an idea of your's gets used, you'll get full credit. Kristof's post in this very forum is a good example of this.

If its writing or artwork that you're interested in providing, I highly recommend submitting your work to CAVHQ and their Fan Fiction and Fan Art sections. You never know what might happen next, but even if nothing happens, you've done something to support the CAV community and help it grow.

I am looking forward to the development of CAV. CAV is in good hands. Thanks for the info.

I'm pumped about the Friday Updates. Any idea when those will begin?

We're planning on a mid- to late-April launch.
