I don't have time to go into huge details this morning, but the con is going well so far. We played a 4k vs 4k game of CAV last night. Thane and James (KaiMaster) vs Rick and myself.

Rick more than held his own, but I had one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. I took 4 Wolverine NO's, a Talon OEM, and a bunch of strikes. I launched 3 Cruise Missiles, all needed 5+ or 4+ to hit, and all 3 missed. My Wolverines managed to do 3 points of damage COMBINED! I think my first four rolls of the game were all 2's.

I took a ton of pics and will post them next week. We played a game of BattleTech after that, which was hysterical. None of us had a clue!

Oh, and my luck carried over to my doctrine too. Took Hunter's Edge and all 4-5 times I got to use it, we'd bury their card, and the next one up would be their's too.

I had them bunched up behind a building at the beginning of turn two and they never got any further. James hit them with a salvo from a Trebechet, and then Thane got his recon section up close enough and called in 4 air strikes on them. One tank only took 1 pt of damage, the others all went down to 4 and 6 pts. I made like 5 repair rolls on my turn to get the tanks back up to par, then Thane brought his other armor section in behind them and hammered them again.

All in all the only thing my guys could do right all game was repair, but even that couldn't save them. Rick managed to finish off Thane's task force, but James ended up with a 3 on 1 CAV advantage and won.

I really, really, wish I'd gone with my first plan and gone gunship/recon heavy. Or all Mastodons.

IIRC, each of us had a 1750 pt task force.

FreeFall and Kai's armies

FreeFall
Armor Section
  • 2x Banshee

  • 2x Chieftain

Specialist Section
  • Outlaw

Recon Section
  • 4 x Stalker

  • 1x Nomad

  • 5x Air Strike - not sure what else

Kai
Specialist section
  • Duelist

  • Crusader

  • Centurion

  • Trebuchet

  • Rick and Chrome

    Rick
    Specialist Section
    • 2x Ronin

    • Thunderbird

    • Chrome
      Armor Section
      • 4x Wolverine NO

      Specialist Section
      • Talon

      • 4x Cruise Missile

      • 1x Orbital Pinpoint Strike

We played using some of our testing rules. Defensive Fire was performed using all available weapons, not just 1. Target Lock and Jamming required Exp Checks. And we used modified IA rules that use Exp for the Target Point roll, which makes it a lot more accurate.

We played on a city built by Thane (FreeFall). The blocks are printed streets, grass, and parking lots glued to plywood sheets. The buildings were printed on thick paper. Unfortunately his basement flooded earlier this year and they all took a little water damage. That's why some of the building walls are warped.

Rick's task force. Considering that only the 4 of us played, I wish we'd gone bigger. I would have loved to have seen more models on this table.

Rick and I both took expensive models, which hurt us on initiative cards. We only had 3 cards to their 4 iirc. Normally I wouldn't think that was bad, especially since I was using Hunter's Edge, but it never seemed like we won init when we needed it and that really hurt us on the 2nd turn. My Hunter's Edge never worked to our advantage once. Every time I buried a card the next one was one of their's too. I suppose it just kept us from getting pounded on even worse.

My side of the table. Those are my tanks in the middle and my Talon in the lower left. Thane owns the Banshee by my CAV, while the two CAVs on the left belong to Rick (my team mate for the fight).

Same scene from a different angle. You can see Thane's Stalkers lined up down the road to the left of my guys. He rolled them up there and then they each called in an Air Strike about 2" to the left of my left-most tank, and laid the AOE right across my formation.

A close up of my Wolverines after those strikes. (I had to proxy the one.) James had actually cracked most of them on the previous turn with a round of IA from his Trebuchet. I think James managed to put a point on the blue one and the proxy, and two on the middle black tank. Then Thane did the rest with his Air Strikes.

Amazingly when I next activated these guys, I made 4 repair rolls and took them all back to 1 DT, except for the black one which still had 2 DT after hitting both of his repairs. Then they all failed their Attack rolls and took more damage from the defensive fire.

That's Kai, with FreeFall's shoulder on the right. I snapped this just to catch a bit of the con's gaming area. This was still pretty early on - probably about 5:00 on Friday night.

Kai's Trebuchet (the model belongs to FreeFall) stands by while its section mates get up close and personal on the far side of the table.

The end game. Kai's Centurion put the killing blow on Rick's Thunderbird. Thane and I were both out of the game by then. The only other surviving model was Kai's Trebuchet.

At the end of it all, my forces made a pretty weak showing. One take put 2 points of damage on a Stalker and a point on another via DefFire. One other tank did a point of damage via DefFire. That was the total of my offensive firepower. Meanwhile I had 3 Cruise Missiles all fail to do any damage, and my Talon got wasted before it could launch the 4th missile or use its Pinpoint Strike. All in all, not a good day for the Ritterlich.

Here's a basic turn by turn BatRep from what I can remember. Well only first 3 turns I guess, b/c Neil arrived around 6:20 and once I was out of the game I started talking to him and stopped paying attention to the little details. Some teammate I am, huh?

Turn 1
Thane's recon section had its Recon move, so it got fairly far down the table by the end of turn one. Thane and I both double moved our tanks, Kai moved his CAVs up, except for the Trebuchet.

I fired a Cruise Missile and since we were playing across the short way, it reached one of his Banshees right away. I needed a 6 to hit and rolled a 2.

Thane's Outlaw shot at somebody, don't remember who. Rick's guys shot at the Outlaw, did 1 pt of damage to it. Kai's Trebuchet fired at my tanks, and I laughed at him b/c I didn't realize he had one of those bastard kitbashes I let Thane get away with creating. I figured I didn't have much to worry about w/a 14 DV, but he managed a few hits.

Turn 2
Thane goes first and hits me w/all of those Strikes. I go next and make a bunch of repair rolls, but miss the few shots I take at Thane's Stalkers. I also leave my rear open to Thane's tanks, which roll up and kill one of my Wolverines. Another one of my Cruise Missiles explodes harmlessly against a Banshee.

Rick finishes off Thane's Outlaw. Kai's CAVs keep moving across the table, and his Treb hits my tanks again, killing one more IIRC.

Turn 3
I make some more repair rolls on my tanks. At this point I'm just trying to stay alive long enough that Rick can turn his IA on Thane's Stalkers and do some damage. And hoping that the third time is a charm w/my Cruise missiles. Its not, as I botch the roll again.

Thane's Stalkers get LOS on my healthiest Wolverine and put the hurt on it, but I return some from DefFire. His tanks gut my other remaining tank, leaving me with just one, which Kai finishes off w/his Treb.

Rick gets the Stalkers w/some IA, but its too little too late.

Turn 4
Thane's tanks kill my Talon before it can activate, taking my remaining strikes with it. Rick put some more hurt on Thane's Stalkers, and Kai's CAVs are finally almost to the point where they can get LOS on Rick's.

That's the point where I zoned out, but as you can see from the pictures, it turned into a close quarters furball.
