The Low-Down from Reaper
Apr 05, 2002 Chrome

Matt "Akela" Regan recently made a post on the CAV HQ Yahoo! Group about the status of the Journal of Recognition (JoR), which Nadin Brezinzki was nice enough to cross-post to our boards.

In his post, Matt reveals, among other things, that the primary reason for the JoR's delay is Reaper's decision to place quality over speed. Something that I think we'll all be thankful for in the long run, even if it does mean that Frank has to wait a few more weeks to find out the stats for his beloved Ogre.

A few of the other tid-bits mentioned in the post are Reaper's brand new blister packaging equipment which will allow them to triple their packaging production, Syde's Guide to the Galaxy, a 1/60th scale Infantry Skirmish game, and Imperator.

The best news for us here at Mil-Net thought was the anouncment that a .pdf of the Mastodon's JoR write-up and data card would be on the way to us later today. As soon as we get it in our grubby little hands (or cast in Rave's case) we'll get it posted for you to look at!

Read Matt's post for yourself!

True to his word, Matt "Akela" Regan came through with the info on the Mastodon. I know that you really don't want to read anything that I have to say, so...

Today, Neil "Blitz" Nowatzki presents the first installment in his massive 3D Mecha Modeling Tutorial. More of this will be coming soon, but this initial piece is exhaustively illustrated and carefully explained. It really looks like the beginning of something special.

(bear with me, I haven't done this in a while)

CAD Blitz
Apr 09, 2002 RaveZero

Just added the Blitz to Digital CAV. Not much is known about the unit save that it's an old "missile boat" design. The CAD version of the unit was created by John Bear Ross of Hellion Productions, and is based on line-art by James "Jimbo" Burrel.

New Mil-Net Logo
Apr 10, 2002 RaveZero

First, I'd like to present to you the new Mil-Net logo (look up!), along with the formal announcement of the latest member of the Mil-Net staff: Neil "Blitz" Nowatzki, our official artist. You may have seen some of Neil's artwork under our Digital CAV section.

Neil doesn't know it yet, but he'll also be working on Mil-Net desktop wallpaper based on the new art, and a Mil-Net t-shirt design as well.

To check out Neil's custom work, including his own Battletech 'Mech design called the Blitz (not related to the new CAV of the same name), check out Neil's 'Mech Page.

New Wave Has New CAV In Stock
Apr 11, 2002 RaveZero

I received word from New Wave last night that they just received their order from Reaper which included all five new miniatures (Assassin, Challenger, Gladiator II, Panther, and Sovereign III).

If you're looking for these minis and can't find them, I suggest you give New Wave a shot, even if it's simply for the 20% off retail price of their CAV miniatures.

For those that may have had bad experiences with New Wave orders in the past, try giving them another chance. I've been told that past problems have been rectified by new inventory tracking and billing systems.

Moving On Up!
Apr 12, 2002 RaveZero

Over the next few days we'll be moving the Mil-Net site to a new host. If we do it right you'll only notice a ripple in the site's availability, if at all. If we don't, well, the site may be down for a while!

While I'm posting, please be sure when submitting CAV miniature photos to the Miniature Gallery that you keep the width of your images to 200 pixels or less. I had to reject some nice pictures of a Challenger because the submitted images were too large, even though they looked excellent!

Move In-Progress
Apr 15, 2002 RaveZero

The move to the new site is still in-progress, but nearing completion.

If you typically go to www.mil-net.net to reach the site you'll notice you've been redirected to cav.steelcommand.com. All parts off the site should still be accessable. If you're having a problem getting somewhere, make sure you're not being sent to a Mil-Net URL. If so, just substitute cav.steelcommand.com.

Also, the admin@mil-net.net address isn't currently working, so please use admin@steelcommand.com until further notice. All other mil-net.net email addresses should be working properly.

UCOR SyRaM to Release Classified Information
Apr 19, 2002 RaveZero

SyRaM, the Terran UCOR responsible for manufacturing the incredibly popular Starhawk CAV line, is expected to release information to the public pertaining to the early development stages of it's most popular CAV design to date - the Starhawk V.

Mil-Net has received an advance copy via unnamed sources of a system test on the now-commonplace Charvel Mk II Gauss Gatling gun used as the CAV's primary weapon system.

Tips Needed!
Apr 26, 2002 RaveZero

We need a healthy donation of tips for our Tip of the Week feature! If I can't get caught up I'll probably wind up changing the feature to Tip of the Moment or something like that. I'd rather not, but if the Tip well has run dry...

If you have a Tip to submit, email us at admin@mil-net.net.

Thanks!

Update: I've received nine Tips from four different folks since this was posted. Thanks, all, and keep 'em coming!

Tip of the Week #15
Apr 30, 2002 RaveZero

I'll be catching up to current with the Tip of the Week page throughout the week. Here's the first of the new batch of Tips, a short entry from Nadin titled "Making 3D Terrain is Not Difficult!":

Look for things at home that you can use to build terrain. One of my favorite items are nut cans of several sizes as well as Republic of Tea tin cans. Glue them to some plasticard and primer black. Paint a base color, dry brush, use the seam of the paper for an area of rust, (chestnut ink) and you have an instant silo or gas tank. Quite effective and in scales to our CAV... just remember, thank your neighborhood grocer.
